You want a hair transplant, but you don’t want to shave your head. We get it. Losing your hair can be a distressing process. And when the most effective treatment for hair loss available, hair transplantation, requires shaving your head, you may wonder if the results are worth the hassle. Hair grows slowly, and if you have to shave it all off to restore your hairline, it may feel like a full head of hair is years away.

Stop your stressing! You don’t have to shave your head for hair transplant surgery with Dr. Pramit Malhotra.

With our advanced hidden donor technique, you can restore your hairline and keep your hair. Learn more about our treatments for hair loss at a consultation at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery. What Is the Hidden Donor Technique?

Traditionally FUE hair restoration required shaving the head. By cutting the hair short, surgeons had increased visibility and access to the hair follicles, allowing for the efficient harvest of healthy hair grafts for transplant.

However, many patients were hesitant to shave their heads for hair transplant surgery. Shaving the head makes surgery much more visible. And hair can take a long time to grow back, especially when patients prefer longer hair styles. Many of our female patients decided to skip hair transplantation because they didn’t want to shave their heads.

As FUE technology has improved, new treatment options are available, including the hidden donor technique. Rather than shaving the whole head, the hidden donor technique allows for more targeted hair removal and cutting. Only the necessary hair is cut. By leaving the surrounding hair uncut, longer hair can cover the donor area. With this technique, hair restoration surgery can be performed without shaving the head.

What to Expect from Hair Restoration Surgery with Dr. Malhotra

Dr. Malhotra and his team perform FUE hair restoration, one of the most advanced types of hair transplant surgery available. Both traditional FUE and the hidden donor technique are available.

In FUE hair restoration, individual hair grafts are removed from the back of the head and transplanted into areas of the scalp with hair loss. Since hair from the back of the head is often resistant to loss, these transplanted grafts can restore the appearance of a fuller hairline.

FUE is less invasive than many types of hair restoration surgery. Most patients are back to work within a few days with minimal activity restrictions. The transplanted hair will fall out a few weeks post-surgery, then will begin to regrow. Most patients see good results from their hair transplant within six to nine months of surgery.
