What Is Hair Transplant?
There are two main hair restoration procedures: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT).
FUE hair restoration uses individual hair follicle transplants. It is one of the most advanced hair restoration options available and allows our experts to create natural-looking, artistic hairline designs. The donor area of the scalp in an FUE procedure is typically located at the back or sides of the head. The follicles are harvested with a special punch device that scores the area around the hair and uses suction to pull the graft before being placed into the scalp with small incisions.
FUT, or the “strip” method, is a technique that removes a 1.5-centimeter strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, a discreet section of the lower back of the scalp. This strip can stretch along the back of the head, leaving a scar typically covered by the surrounding hair.
We don’t perform FUT surgery at Ann Arbor Plastic Surgery; however, if this method is most suitable for you, Dr. Malhotra will refer you to a trusted colleague.
Concealing Your Transplant
With significant advancements in modern hair graft harvesting techniques, it’s easier than ever to disguise your hair transplant. Here are a few tips to help you get started.
- Wear a loose-fitting hat. Your head and hair transplants will be covered by dressings after your procedure to ensure you are protected from bacteria. A loose-fitting hat that covers the area can also disguise your hair transplant. Just be sure to avoid wearing any hat that is constrictive or hard on your head.
If you plan your hair transplant during the winter months, you’ll have an excuse to wear your hat!
- Gradually change your hair to a shorter style so that it won’t be as noticeable. Cut your hair short a couple of weeks prior to your hair transplant. If you take a week off after your procedure, your hair will have grown out again after your surgeon shaves your head for surgery.
- Grow or change your facial hair after your surgery. Chances are that new facial hair will act as a distraction instead of the top of your head.
- Consider Long-Hair FUE. This method leaves your hair longer on the top and sides while cutting the hair very short in smaller sections that can be easily concealed.
